I bought a second hand Thomas Aebi Boxwood Bb late last year. It’s only partially lined and during the wet months the head joint tube came unglued (as well as other parts of the flute swelling). Since the tube doesn’t need to be lined up the embouchure hole I figure I could do the gluing at home. Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing (Loren?). The glue that had been used previously was greenish and maybe tacky. I’ll probably fire off an e-mail to Mr. Aebi himself but it’d be nice to get a second opinion.
Okay. My suggestion would, as usual, be to send it back to Mr. Aebi for repair - I have no way of knowing what adhesive he used, and anything you might try to use for regluing may, or may not, stick. In the shop one would, ideally resurface both materials to be rejoined (unless the fit was right and you knew for certain your adhesive would bond to things as they are), or if not enough material exists, then other options would be need to be considered.
That said, if you are determined to have a go at it, I’d say clean both sections to be glued with acetone, let dry, and then attempt to re-glue, at your own risk - keeping in mind that if things don’t work out, and you end up having to send the flute back to Tom anyway, that he’ll then have more of a problem to deal with, because you’ve added additional adhesives to the parts, which then has to be removed.
We can discuss adhesives in detail, if you decide to proceed, and I’d be interested to hear what approaches and adhesives Terry, Casey, Dave C., and so on have used with success - as each has it’s advantages and drawbacks, and some of the stuff we used in the shop, I wouldn’t recommend for home use.
