…all chanters of a speciffic key, or all chanters regardless of key? A reed that would work in D as well as C#, C, B, Bb or other, would be an amazing item indeed…but I cannot see how that could be possible.
Well, 'twas (meant to be) concert I believe only. I’m off to copyright the ‘Universal Reel’.
Alan
Yep it was concert pitch only. Still a truly wonderous item if said reed were to do what the manufacturer claimed.
I guess time will tell, eh?

…as I am thinking, perhaps even longer…but I am afraid to say it…ooops, just did. ![]()
Of course it’s impossible. It isn’t even possible with Highland pipes, where the basic throat/taper has been essentially standardized for decades, there is no second octave, but the pitch of each chanter varies with the whim of the maker. The only place there really is such a thing an universal reed is in NSP, and that’s debatable, but only possible because there is no hyper-sensitive second octave behavior to worry about, and the bore is perfectly cylindiracal and thus easily universal.
It’s like saying, gee, wouldn’t it be nice if on string would fit all courses on all guitars. We wouldn’t need B strings and E strings (maybe we’d keep the G strings…) we’d just have the “U” string, and that would go on everything from upright basses to mandolins.

If it’s not Scottish, it’s crap.

(Well, sometimes even if it is Scottish it’s still crap, but be that as it may.)
I blame Thies for all this..

Yes yes, the most important thing is to assign blame, make it an individual, and then go on to ignore the problem till it happens again, at which time we simply need repeat the process.

…when performing on stage, I have always employed a bit of wisdom that I got from…erm…I forget..anyway, it goes something like this:
If you make a mistake while performing, there are at least three things that you can do to cushion its affects:
1). Do it again so it sounds like you MEANT to do it.
2). Stand next to the bass player, then give them a REALLY dirty look.
3). fall upon you knees and plead with the audience, swearing never to do it again.
If it’s not Scottish, it’s crap.

and feeling thoroughly depressed after reading the latest edition of Na Piobaire, which popped through my letterbox this morn, and in which,ye know who, featured heavily in an article about a Tíonal ar an uisce in Sasana
I would add…
If its not frae the How Weird College of Knowledge, it’s crap.

…haven’t gotten mine yet, but your words (Uilliam) foreshadow a ‘read’ that may be uneasy.
On the contary, Joseph I hope that reading about a truly wonderful Uilleann piping event which gave pleasure to many will be a very pleasurable read indeed, whatever your personal loyalties or preferances to particular makers or teachers.
