The Irish Government is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day by announced new tax measures.
Because of the economic situation in Ireland, the Dail has passed laws levying taxes on the live performance of Irish music. These taxes are applicable worldwide, regardless of residence or citizenship.
Starting today there will be a €2 tax payable each time a double jig or reel is played. This increases to €3 for each slow air but drops to €1 for hop jigs, slip jigs, single jigs, slides and polkas.
To encourage the playing of hornpipes, marches and long dances, all such tunes will be temporarily exempt from the tax.
Playing in pitches other than D and G gives rise to a 5% increase in the applicable tax, so flat pipers beware.
Vamping on the regulators will result in a surtax of €5 per vamp.
Accordion players are subject to an addition head tax of €100 each time they turn up at a session.
Bodhran players are entitled to claim accelerated depreciation on their tippers (limited to a maximum of 3) but are no longer allowed to deduct interest payments on loans to acquire said tippers.
Finally sight-reading O’Neill’s in a session and playing the v-pipes in public are capital offences.
This will make yer day

Fortunately the days when I thought St Patricks Day meant getting so drunk that lost of control was the goal, are long gone. Over the winter there have been twelve butterflies hibernating in our bathroom ,today only four are left. The rest, over the last week have danced at the window for freedom, which they were happily granted.
St Patricks day,is now, for me the beginning of hopefully a good summer.
