Happy Pi Day!

Happy Pi Day!

I’m posting this a day early for me (in Alaska time zone, GMT-9), but it’s already Pi Day for some Chiffers.

Pi Day, 3/14, is a day to celebrate that tastiest of mathematical constants, π. (I tried to paste in the Greek lower-case letter pi here – I’m not sure if it will show up right in browser displays.)

Are the 6 finger holes in your favorite whistle circular? If you look at the bell end of your whistle, is that opening a circle? If so, then you should celebrate Pi Day with a few tunes, because π is the ratio of the circumference of any circle to its diameter.

Even if you don’t care about math or circles, Pi Day is a great excuse to eat pies, sing rounds, and have your musical friends over to share some tunes. (Any instruments that don’t incorporate circles somewhere in their design can at least play nice round whole notes to join in.)

For any who missed it last year, here’s my Pi Day opus, “Pi 111,” the first 111 digits of the decimal expansion of π as a waltz in G major:

For those that want to play Pi 111 on Pi Day, here’s how to get the sheet music. Go to
http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html
and paste the following (not including the dashed lines) into the box, then hit “submit”. It will give you a low-quality screen view of the sheet music. You can get a better version by then clicking on “PDF Sheet Music.”

Happy Pi Day to all of you!
Sarah

It’s Lent. No pie for me.

Redwolf

I finally got around to thanking you for the reminder!

I thought it was the seventeenth, that’s why we had the parade Saturday.
