I heard an interview with him on the radio a couple of years ago, probably for his 90th birthday. He seemed much more thoughtful than your average musician (no offense intended to anyone). The kind of guy I’d love to sit down with for a few beers and conversation about music and whatever the conversation morphed into.
I met Elvin Jones many years ago. I always had a deep respect for all the Joneses, including Philly Joe, who I thought was one of the brothers till I looked them up when Elvin died.
A sad loss. Jones was one of the best.
Even if you have no interest in jazz as such, you will very likely enjoy his series of duets with Charlie Haden on old gospel tunes and spirituals: Steal Away Simple, powerful and as deep as it gets.

I’m so sorry to read about this. I loved Hank Jones style.
