Hello ,
What about this half set on Ebay-France ? I asked the seller , no answer .

Translation:

Authentic uilleann pipes half set made by Leo Rowsome, Dublin, in working condition, comes with bag cover and replacement reeds. Very good tone.

This instrument is particularly precious given that the instrument maker who made it is a legend both as a musician and as a maker of instruments.

A half set of pipes is generally worth 4,500 euros.

A half set of Leo Rowsome pipes … current bid is 1,510 euros. 15 hours left.

Here’s the photo:

P.J. Thanks for the translation .

Is this half really a Leo’s one ?

The bass drone resonator looks about right but its very hard to tell.

Have a look at Kevin Rowsome’s website:

http://www.kevinrowsome.com/

There’s a section about Leo which contains photos of Leo’s own set of pipes.

I was .
Difficult to say . It’s not for bying …only to know if this guy is correct !

There’s something that doesn’t smell quite right. Perhaps parts of the set were made by Leo, but consider:

there’s only one picture
the drone configuration looks a bit odd (to my eye)
the set is offered only in eBay france
the seller’s suggested price “en general” for a half set is abnormally high

If the seller had what is advertised, and understood its value, I would expect the offer to look different. caveat emptor

I can only see the bass and bari drones and it looks to me like the bari is to the left of the bass, which would indicate that the stock was made for a left-handed player.

More photos and information from the seller would certainly be welcome but there’s only 15 hours left in the auction.

And I asked him ..he don’t answer .
A bidder has already canceled his bid because the seller has no possible contact .
I’m OK with that too : " the seller’s suggested price “en general” for a half set is abnormally high "
Strange .

On the one hand, it is a bit strange, for all the reasons that billh pointed out. On the other hand, if it really is a Rowsome half set, then 1,510 euros is merely a fraction of its value.

The seller indicates that he accepts personal cheques. Why not buy it, send a cheque which is post-dated a few days. If, when the pipes arrive, they are stamped L ROWSOME, DUBLIN, great!! You’ve got a mighty set of pipes. If not, stop payment on the cheque.

Maybe the seller won’t ship them until the cheque clears.

Well he won’t now that you’ve warned him!!!

All my plans … in ruins … and nobody cares … :sniffle:

Just asked him the years of fabrication and how he is able to tell it’s really a Leo Rowsome set .

That might not work in this instance but you might try that with one of those nice Nigerian fellows. Let us know how it works out.

Warned or not, the risk is, you send post dated cheque ‘by a few days’, pipes not sent for ‘a few days’, post dated cheque cleared while pipes in transit, pipes arrive but not what they’re made out to be, you lose money. You’d need to send post dated cheque of about a month to be safe. Then seller would know what you’re up to.

The seller don’t answer , photo and text are not clear …there are two good reasons not to bid . On Ebay sellers and buyers are generally more communicative .

Hi ,

I get the answer from that guy

Translation :

"The ueliann pipe (sic)is stamped leo rowsone on the bellow , it was made in 1971 Leo Rowsone ( sic ) is dead in 72 "

Ah , Ah , Ah …

Leo Rowsome died in September 1970.

Who would buy an item like that from someone who does not know their piping history?

How many hours left till that auction closes?

The bellows could well be made by Leo Rowsome, but the rest…
It could be made by Leon, the son.
Leons stuff was copied directly from the DA but it just wasnt as aesthetic. It worked though.
I wouldn’t buy it though for that money. Offer 20 quid…

Tommy

You are right Jim

My idea is : he is not a piper because whe had a tionol in Brittany last week end and at least one or two persons could have heard about this set ; nobody spoke from this set ! France is not the USA and there is only about 250/300 pipers and they know one and another .

This guy is a " famous unknown person " .

JIM , (out of thread ) You know , we have a festivity on the 25 of Juny for the birthday of a man you know . I am sure it will be great !
