Greetings to all...

Hello from Oregon, USA… I am a new member here, and excited to find such a lively forum for flute discussion. I haven’t had a lot of experience with playing Trad, or these wooden irish flutes everyone seems crazy about… but I have been playing various flutes for years, and have a habit of fabricating them in a compulsive fashion from time to time.

Just got word from Michael Cronnolly that my R&R six key is shipping within the week, and am SO excited.

I look forward to learning even more about flutes, and participating in the discussions here. Love that flute porn thread, everyone has such nice instruments.

Welcome, Binary!

Welcome aboard the good ship Chiff & Fipple! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve made a few flutes myself (bamboo which I enjoy working with but am not very good at yet) and more commonly PVC or CPVC pipe (which sounds better). Were your self-fabricated flutes simple system? If so, the jump to a more tradional flute will be easy. If you’re like me (I have a delrin 3 piece Dixon), you’ll also sound a lot better, too.

If you don’t like that 6 keyed M&E R&R, please feel free to send it to me! I love the look and sound of that flute.

Welcome Binary.
Are there weekly sessions where you live?
Let us know how you find the M&E.
how long was the wait?

My son goes to the University in Eugene ~ we lived in Medford for awhile.
This is a great board ~ Welcome!

Hi Ya!

Thank you to all for the warm greeting. I actually haven’t received the M&E yet, and am so excited about it! After emailing back and forth with Mr. Cronnolly for a week or so, he apparently had one already made and offered to sell it to me. So I guess the wait time was about a week plus shipping (ie: I lucked out)… there were some special circumstances involved however (I lucked out) so I don’t know how long the wait usually is. Will post a review after I get a chance to play it for a bit.

Jayhawk, if you mean by “simple-system” that is “not Boehm”, then yes. Even with an open hole Boehm, the sensation of these simpler flutes with the air under your fingers is more exciting. I haven’t made any with keys yet, so I just switch flutes when I need a different scale/mode/sound.

Not sure if there is even a good Irish pub here in town, really, let alone Sessions. Up in Portland, there were many.

Binary - I do mean “not Boehm” when I say simple system. The classic 6 holes and an embouchure/blow hole. They are fun to make, but buying a “real” flute really showed me how far I had to go when it came to making a really good flute.

Again, welcome aboard. It’s nice to find another fellow flute maker.

Now, if only I could find a mechanic who could fix my car the first time around and not take 3 tries I’d be really happy. Sorry, I just spent $430 to fix my brakes and get a new axle, and the darn thing sounds like either I need a new caliper or (hopefully) they just need to adjust the brake.

I hate cars. Oh how I wish I could keep our horse in the backyard and trade the car for a flute…
