Green Groves of Erin

Do you play a C# or Cnat? I don’t think Cneutral is an option.

Cnat.

seems an odd question, all versions I know don’t have ANY c in them

I don’t think this version is the same as the Bothy Band’s, although it’s not entirely different

B

Now you see, this may be the problem! I’m probably hearing different people playing different triplets some with C# some with Cnat , and if I’d just grab the B in the middle and forget the rest I’d be fine.

thanks all!

I play it without Cs, too. That abc boyd posted is not a version I’ve heard. (I don’t have the Linane/Hill album).

You should though mr bloomfield, it’s a classic.

On a serious note though, I can’t see you put a c anywhere in the tune other than a quick grace e triplet or passing note and in those cases the pitch isn’t relevant. This is a very rhythmic tune, concentrate on that. On another note, I just came across a wonderful whistle version of it, full of contrary rhythms and unexpected outlooks. It’s a great tune.

That abc is pretty close to what the old boys here in Chicago like to play.

I sometimes do the first part like this:

A2 cA eAcAlG2 3bcd gdBG etc or

A2 3BcA eAcA etc.

The BcA triplet is played very quick and staccato…and I hold the preceding note just a bit longer than full quarter note value. It may not be note for note but the effect is similar to Tommy Peoples’ approach to the tune, where he plays a stuttering bowed triplet in this same spot.

This is an example of why notation, even abc notation does not really capture the music and your ears are always your best guide.

I play something like this in the beginning:

A2BA eABA | G2Bd gedB | A2…

I know, I know. It’s on my list. I actually got a copy of their Home Ruler/Kitty’s Wedding track once, and lifted that. Very nice.

whoops. watch that delete key! I meant Green Groves anyway.

not that I have great need for anything unexpected in this tune, seeing as you were pointed about the C’s…but just wondering, what is this paragon of a Green Groves on the whistle?

It just happened to stumble onto me just after christmas, Bloomfield has a clue maybe, just a version probably going back to Willie Clancy. just wait, you’ll get to hear it.

Great Cats are good at waiting…but I don’t have to LIKE it.

True. I was thinking of a variation I’d heard somewhere and picked up (last 4 measures of the A section, and pardon my abc notation):

ABcd eAAA BGEF GABd

Where did I hear, that, now?
