Great Rocky Mountain Session Review

It had better be an annual thing, or I’ll be showing up unexpectedly next year!

Paul did you get the message/mail I sent you about sessioning in Boise?

Hmm…many many whistles, a concertina, a flute, guitars, bodhrans, harp, Brian’s pipes that I still can’t pronounce, a jaw harp, a banjo (I think)…what did I miss, Bri?

Hey I DID say it was a partial list! hehe

Note I left out some of the more UNtraditional numbers. those are for later!

Beth, did you happen to get Amazing Grace down?? I know the gentleman who requested it would be floored if we could give him a copy…

B~

I don’t think we did. I think it was played after Parting Glass, and I had already packed up. I barely got set up again in time for Tom’s last song.

Sorry!

Beth, my wife provided me with a nice memory device for the pronounciation.

While listing to my second pipe tune set, my wife comes in, scrunches up her nose, and says she’s Ill an’ could I please put something else on the player.

You guys look like you had toooo much fun, but would never pass an opportunity to …

Enjoy Your Music,

So what you’re telling us is that Blackthorn Stick was played twice?

At the risk of flame war, I have a pronunciation too.

UNION PIPES!!!

That’s what Breathnach says they are and should be called but admits other usage has become more universal. And he was a piper, scholar and native.

And I like to attend SESSIONS, not SEISIUNS!! I’ll bet the only people who use the second are Americans here.Go ahead and prove me wrong. I’m humble.

Hey everybody, Im goin up to the Sierras for five days so don;t everybody do cartwheels all at once. Will miss ya. Closest whistler is Murphy Stout but he’s an hour away at least, probably more. Unless there are lurkers in Truckee/Tahoe area.Send note quick tonite if so so we can play up there in Soda Springs.

No, once was Blackthorn Stick and once was THE Blackthorn Stick!

No, actually what I’m telling you is I cut and pasted my playlist into the message, you caught me, and we really did play it twice. But we played it at different speeds, hehe.

“Uilleann” = The Irish Gaelic for “Elbow”, which is of course, the method used both to fill, and then to play these pipes.

Some folks use the term “Union”, but I believe the more commonly used term is still uilleann. Jerry O’Sullivan says uilleann, and he’s also a great player, as well as scholar regarding ethnic musicology, and Itrad in particular.

If you’re refering to MY pipes, I’d call them uilleann!

And we did play several of the tunes that night twice…seems we had different folks playing at different times, or were teaching them to others in the group. I forget the others we repeated though…

Well - that one explains why you called it what you did! I thought you were just being drunk! hehe

Wow, what can I add to what’s already been said? That was one of the most ridiculously fun weekends of my entire life so far.

The Saturday session was absolutely amazing–never have I played with a group of people who were so GOOD yet so laid-back and accepting (and it’s a good thing, as I brought both my slide whistle AND my jews harp!). Superb musicianship, wild abandon in the playing of tunes, craic beyond mighty, songs, stories (most of them dumb and/or untrue), many grand new friends. A rare, almost-perfect time.

And as if that all isn’t enough, I was able to pick up five (count 'em, FIVE!) new tunes!

I can’t believe you guys forgot to mention the visit to the air force museum. I’m happy to report to everyone here at C&F that Beth (avanutria) now knows what a cluster bomb is.

Nee, Peng, and neeEEEEWA–
Tom

p.s. Glad to hear the Boys out in Colorado were raising the rafters a bit, too! We were with you in spirit.

Stay tuned for the Lander session in November, give or take a month!

I’ll be there!
