I got my Chieftain Tenor F in on Friday, and it plays beautifully. Just got to get used to that spacing on the right hand, the spread is somewhat assymetrical.
Break out the Flook tunes…!!

Awesome! Do you record? I’d love to heard a sample.
Enjoy the new whistle!

Very cool! Do you have other low whistles? How’s the spacing, breath requirements compare?
I’ve had at one time or another a Dixon, a Howard, a Kerry and have played the entire Chieftain line. The breath requirements are strangely bigger than my Kerry Low D, but nothing compared to a Shaw (did I mention I’ve played a Shaw Low D). My fingers are getting accustomed to the spread for the Tenor F instead of th Kerry Low D (thats the one I’ve played the most). The bottom hole is slightly further down the shaft then the rest (kind of like the “c” sweetone phenomena), but very easy to adjust. I had the same kind of issues when I started on the Kerry Low D, ie covering the holes completely, figuring out the optimum place to set my pipers grip (which you really do need and makes for faster playing). I think this Chieftain may be a bit older than others, but I don’t know if Phil has made any advancements lately.
michael, hey, glad to hear you got a Chieftain low F! - You were nice enough to give me some feedback a couple of months ago on your Kerry low D and I think I’d mentioned I was getting a low F myself, which I like very much. --You just mentioned that your whistle may be an older model. From what I’ve read and heard, all the New Range Chieftains have KWL CHIEFTAIN scribed on them and as of the beginning of 2004 also have the date of manufacture as well. —mike
Yeah, I think mine is several years older…
Congratulations. I recently bought a Cheiftain Gold bflat that I like very much. Congratulations also for having started a thread about Cheiftains and having it free ( for at least 24 hours ) of comments on your abililty to judge the personal value and qualities of a whistle that suit your particular tastes and needs. ![]()
I try to make my comments as impersonal and to the point as possible…hence, I have very little on posts, but you will probably see me lurking a lot.
