I’m new to flutes. I have a silver (Bohem?) style flute I am using. I have no idea what I am doing but presently I’m trying to develop a embouchure and attack and play the 1st scale up and back. So far its a challenge and I like it. I see it takes some skill acquired just to do that. I don’t know what style I want to play, but classic and reading music is not my ambition. I play guitar and popular music is what I play. I hear and see the wooden flute and it attracts me because I like Irish music. Plus they are pretty. I’m not ready to spend lots and lots of money on one presently. So, I’m would like to buy on the cheap and get a PVC flute. I hear they have some very positive attributes. Can anyone give me a guide as to what configuration might be appropriate for me, straight or off set holes. Number of holes and maybe a key. And maybe suggest where I might acquire one. I really have no Idea yet what is going on. Thanks.
Doug Tipple makes a nice PVC flute. You can get one on eBay.
If you want to spend a little more dinero, get an Olwell bamboo for around $100. They are quite amazing.
For Irish music the best key is D.

Thank you. I see there is a wait for Patrick Olwell cane flutes. I asked at House of Musical Traditions about what I might expect. That sounds like a winner to me.
