About it taking me long enough. I actually built the whistle last September. Getting it written up & posted is what took me forever…

Besides sheets of sand paper I used a drum sander attachement on my power drill. The attachment and three sanding drums was about $5 at home depot. It takes about 5 minutes to shape one up this way. This is a great way to find some use for all those cheapies just hanging around.

How did you get it even all around the tube? Was that hard to do?Are you using Teflon tape on the joint?
OK. I have mastered my convulsive fits of laughter, so let me add my patented head-removal technique while I’m waiting for your sound clips to download on my antique 'pooter.
Instead of boiling water or even herbal tea, try this:
Light a candle.
Heat the whistle halfway between the decal and the mouthpiece. Don’t put the whistle IN the flame.
Turn it once in a while.
The head should be loose after 30 seconds or so. Sometimes you get a puff of smoke coming out of the fipple. A religious moment, to be sure.
Occasionally there is some glue residue on brass whistles and/or brass whistle mouthpieces. Wait until things cool down before you sand. You may not need to.
Try this onstage when your partner is going on and on about Geminiani and O’Carolan. Your tip jar will overflow.

The drum sander attachment takes off such a small amount of the brass at a time that if you keep turning it you get a pretty even job. Yes, I use teflon tape and that works really well to tighten it up. The only problem with this method is that you might end up scratching up the tube below the head. This might not appeal to everyone.

I’ve had an Eb Sindt for a couple of years shortly after I got it I fitted a Feadog shaft and it’s stayed there ever since, one of my favorite whistles.
If you have a C Sindt you can fit a Walton’s Mellow D shaft you then have:
A Wide Bore Sindt!

At the 2001 Swannanoa Gathering, piper Kieran O’Hare was playing, if I recall correctly, a Sindt head grafted onto a brass Generation C. There was black tape – what I think was electrical tape – around the joint. I could be wrong about this, because I knew even less about whistles then than I know now. I didn’t know enough to ask if he did this to half-hole.

The older Soodlums whistle also works to create a wide bore sindt from a C head. Ohh man does it sound good. Just have to tweak a couple holes to bring them to correct pitch. On second thought I better get a mellow D since the soodlums is my wife’s whistle. She freaked a bit when she saw me pop off the head.
