gen ???'s

So, I received a generation D in the mail because my E flat plays like a charm, and I figured if the fipple was jacked on D I could just replace my E flat head with the D when need be, but the tone does not really change with differing fipples. The lower register of the D cracks a bit with both fipples. So, I tried taking some fine sandpaper to the portion of the tube that meets the fipple to sand down anything that might be obstructing the flow of air, but this didn’t do much either.

So, what do you guys suggest (it’s nickel plated).

Pack the hollow under the windway with blue tack. If that doesn’t help then I’d toss it..My experience with Generations is that they are either great right out of the box or forever mediocre…

There have been two threads recently that contain information about this. Especially, see my last post in the second thread linked to.

P.S. It’s been my experience that you can often clean up those bottom two or three notes, sometimes to the point that they’re really good and strong.

I thought I might have made this evident, but I don’t think it’s a matter of the fipple having the problem seeing as it works on the e flat tube quite well. But I guess what you are saying is I have to sacrifice one of the fipples to compensate for the junky tube. Thanks for your help.

The tube (or tube-fipple compatibility) is certainly a factor. I have an O’Briain Improved Eb (tweaked Feadog fipple on a modified Gen tube). It’s the finest Eb whistle imaginable!!! However, if I switch the fipple to a Gen D tube it’s crap.

You may end up with a mouthpiece that works best for the D tube and one that works best for the Eb tube.

What I said about tweaking to strengthen the bottom notes would still be my advice. I’ve done that to quite a few whistles. Since I didn’t have an Eb tube to compare, it never would have occurred to me to think there was anything doubtful about the tubes. And I was successful in getting them to play better.
