Gavin Whelan CD?

Anyone heard this CD by Gavin Whelan. If so, any comments? I had a quick browse through the Top 10 CD thread and it wasn’t mentioned.

BTW this looks like a good site for Irish Trad CD’s

I have the CD. I’ve been listening to give a review of that and two other whistle CD’s that I have not heard of in the C&F empire. He does not play blazing fast (Mary Bergin speed), but goes along at a health clip. Very solid playing, ornamentation is not overdone, with subtle variations. Good traditional music. There are some marquis musicians playing with him. I think the whole thing is played on a Generation Eb with a couple of tracks with a Susato C. If you are not in a hurry, I hope to send my reviews to Dale in two to three weeks.

One of the other CD’s I am reviewing is real nice, but sure to make Brother Steve seasick. All three CD’s feature Generation whistles. Food for thought.

Gavin is a (&#($ awesome player and on eheck of a great guy as well. I had a chance to hang out with him for a couple of days last summer and I was very, very impressed by his playing. He does indeed play a Susato C and brass Generation Eb on his album. In sessions he plays an old brass Generation D and his uilleann pipes. His whistle style is very influenced by the stacato style of pipes playing, and he triple tongues all his rolls to make them pop out beautifully, just like rolls on the pipes. Wonderful guy, great music, well worth listening too. And by the way, he’s 22 (or maybe 23).
I’d recommend the Knotted Chord for CD purchases. http://www.knottedchord.com

Thanks Chris, for the link - looks like a great resource - I’ve already found some CD’s that I’ve been searching for for a while (Tulla Ceili Band etc.).

Thanks also for the info on Gavin - Is he from Galway? Was that where you met him?

Gavin lives in Dublin. I met him first at a session at Willy Week in Maltown Malbay, Co. Clare. Later I spent a couple days with him on Achill Island during the two week long Schoil Achlla (sp?). I woke up morning and went downstairs and he and his girlfriend were sleeping on the floor of the hostel I was staying in. We had a mighty couple of days.

Hey Chris, a technical question here: how does one triple tongue the rolls.

I hope you got the 40th anniversary one (vs the 50 th) the fiddle/flute duet of JC Talty and Michael Murphy on that one is lovely

Also try Custy’s in Ennis, they possibly have even more than your man

Obviously you are in a pub, and it must be about 2:30 in the AM.

Woops Peter, I meant Miltown Malbay… It’s a bit of a tongue-twister isn’t it.
As for triple-tonguing rolls… don’t ask me, I just know that he does it and it is very cool.

As for tripple-tonguing rolls…

Sure you don’t mean trippple-tonguing? BTW Eld don’t ask me either.

No, I meant tttrrriiipppllleee tonguing. Now, this is what HE said he does. Don’t ask me how he does it. I’ve tried and I can’t do it on a roll for the life of me.
