'T’is a simple question of how infrequently I use it during performance (a factor of the music I play, not the whistle - a fine instrument indeed!)
(Moreover, I have his high G, plus a Bleazey G flute on the way.)
I can’t personally recommend that wee Metloef because I haven’t played it, but I can speak of an almost identical drum. I have one the same dimensions which is lambeg skinned. It’s articulate and suited well to the precision of top end playing although those rims are wild close!. Rob’s Roo skins, I have found, play very similarly to the lambeg skin, but roos have a slightly fuller bottom end.
It’s a bit tight for the left hand in there at first but you loosen up to the drum’s size and eventually it fits like a glove. All the sounds are there from booms to trills & pops and the wee drum won’t lack in flexibility & dynamics, I have had many positive comments on the lower tones of my drum and, with this instrument being played in, there should be instant results.
You can hear/see my drum at http://www.bodojo.com in the top end section. The audio is from the cam, all attack & no tone.
I have no connection with Tommy but I am a friend & occasional collaborator of Robs, I saw a good drum for sale and I thought I’d offer a personal opinion on this type of instrument.
Thank you Paul.
Your comments are dead-on; this little thing is an absolutely fine instrument.
As I say in the description, I am selling two Abell whistles (one of which I had custom made in pink ivorywood and silver with 9 holes) and a resonator mandolin currently on eBay as well.
Of these four current auctions, the one that makes my heart ache most is this little drum.
It just boils down to, “How many drums do I own, how many do I regularly play, and how many will I sill get a lot of use out of when my newest drum on order is finished?”
I’ll certainly miss it.
I own one other Metloef. (I have owned four Metloeves? in total over the years and have been immensely pleased with all of them) The only reason I’m keeping that one instead of this one is that this one has it’s own case and the other doesn’t (I can transport the other inside my larger drum in that larger case), so this one makes a better “package”.
