FS - Rosewood Sweetheart Fife with Tapered Bore - $85

Here’s another potential present, Sweetheart Rosewood Fife for just $85 postage and insurance included within the U.S.

This is a great playing fife with a strong bottom register! Walt Sweet designed this fife with an exterior that is cylindrical, but a bore that is similar to a Boehm flute (with a parabolic taper in the head and cylindrical body). The resulting fife that plays well over 3 octaves with a rather deep pleasant tone. Walt recorded all the tunes on his CD that accompanied his “Complete Music for Fife & Drum” on this model of fife. This is the predecessor to Walt’s current “Stealth” fife.

This fife is #44 and dated October 3, 1991 and is supremely stable!

Am I right that this is in Bb? I had the sweetheart cloos copy Bb fife, which had quaint tuning
and a weakish bottom register, but was still charming.
How is the tuning on this?

Hey Jim,

Yes this is a Bb fife.

The tuning is pretty good, but it doesn’t sound like an Irish flute, it sounds like a fife. The longer I have been playing the more specialized I find my flute and toots. I really like playing fife tunes on this fife, but Irish music leaves me a bit wanting (just doesn’t sound quite right to my ear).

This fife and Healy fifes are the only ones that play well in the bottom octave (that I know of).

I’ll drop the price to $75 and should be able to get it to you for the Holidays (if you act quickly).
