I have a practice set for sale. I pieced this set together (thanks to my friend Jason Smith) over a year ago for a young friend who was already playing the low whistle and wanted to play the pipes. However, he already plays a bunch of instruments well and never really had time to learn, so he gave it back to me.
The chanter is a Uilleann Pipe Works of Boston keyless polymer concert chanter in brass and imitation ivory (see pictures below). I made the reed for it. Great reed. With the reed the chanter is easy playing, strong bottom D and back D, and great tone. I honestly can’t tell any difference in tone from a wooden chanter. It has been played in very dry and humid climates and performed really well. The chanter was relatively easy to reed, and I would be willing to reed it for free if something happens to the reed in the future.
The bag is marine vinyl in dark grey also made myself. It is absolutely air tight and has a longish neck that could also work for a flat chanter. The stocks for the bag and bellows were made by Jason Smith. The set comes with an extra longer piece of hose to connect bellows and bag.
The bellows is an older custom David Daye bellows. It is a workhorse. Absolutely airtight and puts out a lot of air. It has a sturdy brass hinge that is covered in leather. The gusset is heavy duty thick leather, and it has a very comfortable leather covered elbow pad. I actually thought about keeping the bellows but it really does go well with this set.
Also, the practice set comes with a padded small hard case that fits the set perfectly (See pics). Very sturdy.
