I’m selling my Fred rose flute. I’ve had it about 18 months. I’m pretty sure I haven’t played it 20 times.
It’s a good flute, don’t get me wrong, and I really like it. But ultimately, I’m a whistler at heart, and rarely pick up the flute. I’m thinking a less-expensive tipple will probably serve me just fine as an occasional knock-about instrument, and I won’t have to feel guilty about having this nice instrument that I don’t play.
The flute has a little ding in the end of it. I don’t remember if it was there when I got it, but I seem to recall that it was.

There are no other cracks or blemishes, and the flute plays fine.
I’m not a pro player or anything, as I said…With that in mind, here’s a sample recording on the flute..it was recorded a little hot, so there’s some clipping in the upper end, but that’s totally the sound system, and not the flute. A recording on the flute
These whistles are about $340 new. I’d like $220. Comes with a soft case made out of some material that feels like wetsuit material or something. I’ll ship the whistle, priority mail with insurance and tracking as part of the purchase price.
As Fred is now making his flutes out of Honduran Rosewood, which sell for $390, this represents the chance of a very real bargain.
I love my Rose flute and find it responsive and easy blowing; I can even manage most of the 2nd octave, with a very friendly embouchre.
I would also consider trades or partial trades…Things I’m interested in:
Low D tunable whistle–While I love my Chieftain low D, it’s non-tunable, which can make it a challenge to play in very hot or cold environments.
high C tunable whistle. I have a Susato, and while it gets the job done, I’d like something I can really go crazy on like a Burke Composite C or a Copeland C.
I previously had a Fred Rose flute in Bubbinga which was lovely to see and play. Bubbinga wood has lovely inner radiance like tigereye. I considered it the “Biggest Bang for the Buck” I know of in Wooden Flutedom.
Here’s a picture of my old one:
I currently have one of Rose’s newer flutes in rosewood (they now wear caps and he has thinned the bodies) and they have even improved!
These are truely wonderful simple little flutes at exceeding modest prices.
