No tuning slide?
nope. I purposely went for the model without tuning slide for the tonal qualities. I have played this flute in sessions and never needed a slide (there is some scope for tuning with the tenon). Here’s something Martin mentions on his website
“Q: Do your flutes without tuning slides sharpen when they are warmed up?
A: Yes they do and how that’s compensated is that the joint of the flute is a tuning devise and can be pulled out up to five millimetres. This allows all of the tuning that will be necessary to keep the flute perfectly in the pitch it’s designed to be in.”
I’ve played some of these. Lovely good playing flutes. And they handle easily.
I talked to Martin D about the slideless flute (which
is most of what he sells, I believe). He says these are routinely played in sessions–no trouble.
The tenon gives you enough tuning. If I was looking for a keyless D flute I would buy this one
in a flash.

Thanks Jim, it is indeed a great flute. Since receiving my keyed flute a year ago I just don’t get playing it as much as I would like. Sorry Podge, I don’t have any facility for recording sound or video clips. I have a Martin Doyle exactly like that and it has a gorgeous, loud (or not if you play gently) sound. Well worth buying, especially at such a reasonable price. And the celtic design is really nice.
My first wooden flute was a Doyle Celtic model. Like most new fluters, I was convinced that I needed to buy/try lots of flutes searching for my dream flute. I needn’t have gone to the bother. These are excellent flutes in every respect. Had I spent more time “in the woodshed” and less time on hunt for something “better” I’d have still be enjoying the rascal today.
