from whistle to pipes

Will be ordering a set of U. pipes, which may take awhile, and someone told me to learn how to play a penny whistle while waiting. So, what kind of whistle comes closest (in a round-about fashion) to the Uilleann pipe chanter?

I have been learning a Low D, for some time, so I have some idea, but that’s more finger intensive.

Low D is a good instrument for learning the proper grip. Also, I myself find it easier to first learn the tunes on the whistle and then try it with the pipes.
If you want something that is about the size of a pipe chanter, try low F.

Whistle and pipes are two different things, no use playing a low whistle.
Play your whistle, learn your music, start your piping. Whistle playing will excercise your fingers and give you more control over them, piping will ask very different things from you. Lifting your whistle playing straight onto the chanter won’t make you a piper.

I’ve got a not-great-sounding practice chanter I got off ebay that will at least give you the right idea for fingering. You can have it for cost of shipping, email me.
