is the fingering for chanters the same as a whistle?
Highland or Uilleann?
No, to either. Close, though. The basic idea is similar, but the details are different. Then there’s the chanter’s “back D” (or A in GHB parlance). Your average whistle doesn’t have that.
thankyou.
next one, is the fingering for piccolos the same as tin whistle/irish flute?
Simple System: Yes
Bohem/Silver/Ochestral: No
I’ve just made a couple of bodies that have GHB fingering, one in D and one in C. I’m not so sure if I like them, but then I don’t play the pipes so much these days and the fingering isn’t as familiar as it once was. There are a couple of little issues with the way ornamentation sounds, but I will wait to see what the client says after he has had a chance to play them, being much more into the pipes than I am.
This site gives you a lot of useful information on the Uilleann pipes, at least if you’re wondering in depth about how to play them.
All Irish pipers play the whistle. Fingering is not exact but close enough (for folk music, as the saying goes). Players of the highland or warpipes don’t have that affinity.
BTW, the fingerings for an Open Fingered Galician Pipe Chanter is the same as Whistle, but you need to vent the thumbhole for the upper octave and Gaita has a Right hand pinkie hole.
you see, i want to learn something new that i can teach myself and that doesnt cost a stupid amount, any suggestions? i already play the whistle and flute.
Have you tried the fife?
