Free pitch, key and speed shifter.

Tatsuaki Koroda, who brought us the fabulous AutoTuner, has created a free player with control over pitch, key and speed. It also enables you to select parts of the tune for endless repeat, and to save just the selected parts to file. It’s a small XP application but seems to run fine on my Vista PC.

I’ve tried his player before (version 2.7), but was a bit disappointed that when slowed down the output becomes quite echoey, though it was still useful for adjusting pitch. Having tried this one (version 7.5), it seems about the same.

Not many people I speak to know this, but Windows Media Player (I’m using version 10) can adjust tempo between 0.5 and 2.0 times without altering the pitch. Only the other day someone was recommending the amazing slowdowner and was surprised to hear this. Perhaps it’s because it’s tucked away (in true Microsoft fashion!), so to get it select “View | Enhancements | Play Speed Settings” from the menu, and also make sure that “Show Enhancements” is ticked. I’m not sure that this facility is available on the Mac.

I wonder how Microsoft make the quality of sound so good when slowed down? If anyone knows, I’m sure Tatsuaki would be pleased to hear from you.
