Fred Rose and PayPal

I heard from Fred Rose that he has a whistle ready for me and that he now accepts PayPal. My question is: How does one direct PayPal to send funds to Fred in British Pounds even though I pay in U.S. Dollars?

I searched through the PayPal Help files and found no answer to my question. Admittedly, I may not have looked in the right place.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Bob

I just finished doing this. Go to http://www.xe.com, click on currency converter, and find out how much you would need to send in US dollars to equal the amount due in British pounds. Then send the correct amount in US dollars through paypal. I guess his side converts it back.

Update: Fred has emailed me saying he got my payment, so this is a good method to use.

Good luck with PayPal. Though not often, the only time I seem to hear about PayPal is when someone has a horror story to share.
I just sent money to a vendor in England but my method was via ‘wire transfer’ my local bank arranged it at a cost of $45 per transaction. For me, this was fast and easy.
I too used the currency conversion website that Beth used.

Paypal has been great for me… Coming from an Ebay veteran…

$45 a pop… Ouch!

yeah, it is… but it was a big ticket item and it’s out of my mind. No membership, no bank account or credit card information needed to pass over the internet (even if the transaction is secure) so I’m OK with that.

Thanks for the help. The currency converter worked just fine, so now I can get my Rose whistle on the way.

As always, people on this board are so helpful and willing to share.

Why don’t you just send Mr. Rose an international money order in pounds sterling drawn on a UK bank? In Canada the fee for the MO only about $3 CDN. I use them all the time for overseas purchases and I have never had a problem.

I use Paypal and it does accept international payments. The amount shown in US dollars is extracted from the account in the same manner as if you were visiting an American store here in the US. I believe the conversion rate is taken at the time of the transaction, Paypal has some document online that explains their services.
I’ve bought a few things on Ebay with Paypal and I use their ATM card, I have no problems with their services. The have a customer support phone number but I don’t believe the have an overseas phone number.

One other mention, Paypal has one of the lowest cost e-commerce function online since they are an actual bank. Paypal has helped me keep my prices down.
I haven’t really seen many negative things about them.

Actually, Paypal is NOT a bank…they pool their resources across a number of banks. And if you haven’t seen many negative things about them, check out this website (among others):

Paypal horror stories

I used Paypal to pay Fred and had no problems. Pretty easy process actually.

I also sent Fred payment recently via Paypal. He said he got my payment just fine and that the whistle will be on its way!

I can’t wait to get this new whistle. Anyone know how long it ususally takes to ship a whistle from the UK?

Tres

Yep… He said he shipped mine out yesterday… I was wondering the same thing… I once sent my Silkstone to Paul in England and it only took like 5 days to get there… When he sent it back it took about 3 weeks! I hope Fred doesn’t use the same method!

Hmmm…

I can’t say anything about Mr Rose’s shipments, as I haven’t gotten one, but I recently got my Silkstone back from Paul Hayward (in the UK) in about a week. I imagine that 5-10 days would be standard, and anything faster or longer would be due to extenuating circumstances.

Greg

A recent shipment to Germany (one whistle) took about 2 1/2 weeks for my latest package. That’s not out of the ordinary I’m afraid. OTH, I’ve received three or four packages from England in the last several months, and each took just about a week. Perhaps it depends on the shipping method used - the only way I’ve had sucess getting things across the pond within a week was by using USPS Global Expresss Mail. Of course YMMV

Anyone know what Fred’s current price is for his Blackwood D whistles? I asked a couple of months ago, but lost the e-mail and I don’t want to bother him again.

Thanks,

Loren
