Frankenflute on eBay?

Ok, I’m no expert (my posts attest to that), but this can’t be right…right?

Not unusual to have a metal head with a reform lip plate, but the seller does indicate it probably isn’t original given the fit. Not only does the picture show a gap where the headjoint goes on, but looks like someone had to use a wrench on it - a bit chewed up there.

While the flute clearly seems to be a retrofit, the head joint and reform lip plate looks like it might have been an early project of Eugene Lamb.

Definitely a Frankenflute and (aside from the fact that that regular vendor almost always way overprices and evades mentioning that the majority of his offerings are definitely Low Pitch as in A=432-5) not only is the head joint foreign as evidenced by it not fitting the upper body tenon as noted, but it is utterly inappropriate, even if it is a Kohlert head from another flute! Why? Because it is quite clearly (I think, from the photos) a Bohm (“parabolic”) head and the flute body is conoid - a Meyer or Ziegler type simple system. Even if the head seals onto the tenon and the overall sounding length is correct, it simply won’t play in tune, particularly between the octaves. One does see metal “Reform” type heads on conoid flutes that look very similar, but of course they have (need to have) a parallel, cylindrical bore. One also but more rarely sees similar mechanism on Bohm bodies - cylindrical ones, in which case they need the Bohm head… but I reckon this head is from a wooden Bohm system flute - also a common enough configuration (here’s one currently on eBay.). Also, allowing that given the non-matching head we do not know the true sounding length, I think it is virtually certain that this was a Low Pitch flute in its original state. One can, however, observe the good quality workmanship from the Kohlert workshop - not your average nasty nach-Meyer! One of these with its own head and built for 440 would be a decent buy.
