Suppose, just suppose, that one wanted to study
flute in Ireland over the summer.
With whom might one study?
Carmel Gunning, in Sligo.
She’s a lovely person and a terrific musician.

Marcus Hernon in Connemara is a excelent flute player, and a great teacher.
The girl I bought my flute from liked Davy McGuire in Belfast quite a lot. I’ve heard good things about Garry Shannon in Ennis, too. (Tradman would know more; he went to Garry’s Meitheal this past summer) And of course, Harry Bradley’s teaching again in Dublin, isn’t he? (there’s a thread on this board somewhere)
Good luck!
If you’re staying in Dublin, you might want to meet up with Cian O’Sullivan a couple of times. He’s a great player and a nice fellow, I took one lesson from him in summer 2003. You’ll be likely to get a hold of him at those Temple Bar afternoon sessions, either at Auld Dubliner of Cogarty’s.
By any luck you’ll get some private lessons from him at a reasonable price, with tea and bisquits included. ![]()
Come to think of it, I’ll have to enter his name to the WFO III - suggestion thread.
Many thanks, everybody!
Jim:
That’s sounds like quite a vacation. Hmmm, you wouldn’t need someone, oh say, LIKE ME for instance, to tag along and carry your flutes for you, would you? ![]()
Seriously, that’s wonderful. I hope everything works out.
Hi Jim,
I recently went to a performance by an ex student of Marcus Hernon, Dee Havlin, with the band the London Lasses, and what an advert for his teaching she was, a real belting spot-on player, and she said nice things about him and his teaching and played one of his compositions

Thanks again. It’s just dreams so far.
However, short of Ireland, last summer we did this:
we moved to Bloomington Indiana, sublet an apartment
near Indiana U (not expensive) and sat in on lots of
sessions–there were three a week, good ones,
with both amateurs and professionals. Grey Larson
leads one and I took some lessons with him.
About six hours drive from St. Louis. There
is a great music school at IU, and a folklore
program, and lots of Celtic musicians
have collected in the area over the years.
Poor man’s Ireland. I wish more of it had rubbed
off on me! Still it was an opportunity to immerse
myself in ITM.
Thanks Cat!
Actually, although I didnt take lessons from Garry Shannon, his program was unbelievably awesome. I took lessons from Kevin Crawford and Niall Keegan, and both are great lads to learn from. Niall may be a little more accessible since Kevin and the boys are out a bit more, although last week Niall was in Japan. He is based out of Limerick, and is not but about an hour from Shannon/Ennis. Check out www.tradweek.com for a wonderful summertime chance to learn from the best!
What’s Cian doing in Dublin? I thought he lived in Dingle.
Great player…and quite a drinker, too.

At least he was living in Dublin (in his late father’s house I think) in summer 2003.

What kind of biscuits, digestive or jaffa cakes?

Some nice variation of Digestive, if I remember correctly. This might vary from time to time, though. At least more than the music does.
