Thanks, Liney. One of my students taped me nosing through that tune, and later asked for my permission to post it. Interestingly, he was in the process of evaluating his own grip and wanted to see exactly what I was doing. Despite my advice to the contrary (I usually recommend that folks try to stick with the standard grip, perversely), he switched over to the Irish hold and has never been happier. Cheers,

p.s. The other gent in question has a wild Hitchhiker’s Thumb, making his grip a bit different from my own one (thumb pad flat, but parallel to the bore, not perpendicular like most of them piper lads).

Is there a specific nomenclature for the type of grip that I use, which is to say “Classical” grip on left hand, using fingertips, and flat fingered on right hand, using the middle part of each finger?

“Classiper’s”. “Pipical” would be the reverse of it.

I’ve just been through it and now I’ve lost my grip entirely.
Couldn’t we have one of those things like harmonikkerybobdylanyneilyoungy types have?
I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it all seems quite near to the knuckle…

Aw, hell. Guess I’ll just quit then.

Check out the you tube videos of Grada and look at Alan Doherty’s grip. It’s very unorthodox - he uses flat fingers with his left hand like a piper, and uses the very tips of his fingers with his right hand. He should patent it.
