Fitting a new bag

I’ve recently bought a bag from the NPU [L+M,Nova Scotia]to replace a poor replacement to an old Dave Williams concert set.I would appreciate any advice about fitting it…best place to site the hole, how to attach to the stock etc.I’m not too handy in these matters but I thought I’d give it a try.

Dave, have you checked with either Messrs. Dahill or Lerwick? I’m certain that L knows about tying-in, and D as well. If you get some more info, please let us know.

N, good luck to you

Nano..I think you’ve got the above Dave mixed up with me..the above listed dave appears to live in NW england…and wouldn’t know Dahill or Royce…and I don’t need any help tying in a bag!

By the way..how’s yer flat set working?

Let me know if it needs any tweaking…I’d be happy to assist…I’ve got some rosewood to match the chanter for a nice wood top if you are ever so inclined.

By the way…are you signed up for the St. Paul Tionol yet? You get a free Billy McCormick cd out of the deal! It’s looking to be a grand weekend.

Cheers..
DB

OOOPS. My bad. Ouch. Apologies to both of you.

Davey, both the chanter reeds have static leaks that you could drive a truck thru. I really need new reeds. sigh

I’ll give you a call. I’m liking the wood top idea, w/ shoulders for a stop key…whaddya think?

Dave, there are some sites out there that cover tying-in; as for positioning the stock, there is a lot of variation according to body type, drone length, etc. If I can find something, I’ll post on this thread for you.

N, will learn to read

Nano…bring 'em on by…and we’ll see if we can’t fashion up a new reed or two. I think we may want to roll a few staples for that bad boy chanter. I’m sorry to hear the reed is giving you trouble…last I recall it was playing quite well…hmmm? Weather issues possibly? NAW! Not in lovely Minnesota! BAH humbug!

Dave (of NW England -would that be Cumbria?), is yours a full set? If you’re having trouble accessing the regulators, the post “Gettin’ at them Regulators” may offer some ideas as to where you would want the drones to be tied in.

I’m also curious as to where the dronestock is tied in on the present unsatisfactory bag, and if you’re having problems with the way the drones lie. Some like the drones to lie pretty flat along the lap, others prefer that classic slant. I myself am new to pipering, but it seems to me that bag design plays a role in tying-in choices, too. What style of bag did you get?

Anyway, gotta run; all the best.

N, droning on and on

Nano,
The old bag is ?vinyl, rather small with a short neck.It is air-tight but showing signs of wear at the stock attachment. The lie of the drones and regs is fine.
The new bag is elk hide imported by the NPU with a lovely long neck.I don’t want to knacker it by injudicious snipping so I’m trying to get as much advice as possible before taking the plunge.
By the way,I’m in Cheshire, not Cumbria - just about in N-W England, though within spitting distance of the Midlands.

Dave,

Why don’t you ring Dave Williams and ask his advice, you’re not that far away from him.

Incidentally, he is now using plumbers threaded flanges to fit stock cups and bellows feed pipe. They are absolutely foolproof as the leather on the bag acts as a washer. He can tell you what you need to buy and could knock up a new cup for you if you wanted to go that route. The plumbers things won’t work with a conventional stock cup.

Sometimes I think going to an expert for an afternoon is worth it to avoid the frustration and heartbreak of trying to do the job yourself.
