verwy verwy interesting. all of what you’ve said, but particularly this. this seems, at least to me, to be one of the superb suprises about flute playing. that the wonderful bold flute tone comes not from pounding the flute in the general vicinity of the embochure hole with a hurricane force airstream, but with a very small but precisely focused airstream…

the better i get at flute, the more it strikes as not that different from the playing the whistle in many respects…

Well, it does depend on one’s playing style. I dare say Kevin Henry probably uses a bit more wind on the flute than he does on the whistle

I’m really just saying that it’s possible to play the flute with a very penetrating “bold” tone by using only slightly more (or even less) air than you would use on a whistle.
