Fergus Finnegan

Sad news at home in Ireland. Gentleman piper and maker Fergus Finnegan has passed away. He was one in a million, talented, generous sharp as a tack and accommodating. He loaned me a priceless historic set a little over a year for “as long as it takes.” He knew to recreate an instrument all the hidden nuances needed to be discovered through playing the instrument for several months initially before any other work could be considered. He was regularly on the phone to offer encouragement, guidance, providing much insightful information with large doses of gossip and crack heaped on for good measure. He lifted the All-Ireland senior uilleann pipe title twice in the 1980’s and could easily have been a pro. He chose to follow his academic training and became a much sought after tax advisor and consultant, but his heart always belonged to Irish Trad and the pipes in particular. It was Fergus who independently negotiated the tax break at home in Ireland for traditional instrument makers when others were dis-interested, such was his big heart he took on all the work and financial burdens completely on his own and never once stepped forward to claim any sort of adulation. A quiet, mild-mannered man who will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Goodbye Fergus, your loss will be felt by many.
Condolences to your family and friends.

May he rest in eternal peace

Beautiful post

Raise to him a parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Fergus was a gentleman, a great piper and reedmaker. He was always very generous with his time and knowledge. He had a great sense of humour, always ready for a laugh.
Though-out his illness and other trials I never heard him once complain, he was dignified, courageous, and funny right to the end.

As has been already said, it was Fergus who worked tirelessly to get the tax break deal for Pipemakers and Harp makers across the line, as a Pipemaker living in Ireland, I will always be very grateful to Fergus for that very welcome help.

I will miss him as a colleague, but most as my friend. Rest in peace Fergus.

Fergus was a true gentleman and our community is a much sadder pace for his loss. When I moved back to Ireland he very kindly reached out to me to offer help in establishing a new workshop. He offered me all kinds of advice and the chance to purchase a fine lathe and milling machine. We are lucky to have known him and learned from his kindness, vast knowledge and generosity.

RIP my old friend.
