Hello all,
Before there were recordings there was player pianos and large music boxes. I stumbled across this one. I thought you’all might be interested.
…and here I thought midi was a relatively new technology ![]()
“Lavish” is the word that comes to mind.
I just saw an episode of “Hows That Made” on the company that still makes the same style music box.
The discs are still punched manually from a master template.
The punch leaves a curl of metal on the underside of the disc, this plucks the forks as it goes round.

cool!
Amazing, pretty, and yet, if forced to listed to it over and over, I would surely want to put my head under a bus. Just can handle all that plink-n-ring. Hammered dulcimers and wire harps can have a similar effect on me. Maybe it’s a neurological thing. ![]()

Then you are probably not into harpsichord music or Klingon Opera either ?
