I just learned Lady Anne Montgomery reel and it seems particularly well suited to the pipes. After only a few days I can play more comfortably and at a faster tempo than other tunes I have spent months with.
Anyone else find tunes that seem to want to “play themselves” on the pipes?
The Donegal reel seems to fit nicely under the fingers for me. Meaning that it’s way too easy to play it way too fast and way too poorly, but it’s one of those tunes that just make the fingers dance for me.
I wouldn’t think of Lady Anne Montgomery as a pipe tune. Although it’s easy enough to play, it has a bit you have to “fake” as it goes below the bottom note of the chanter.
Thanks for reminding me of this tune.
I am rebuilding my repetoir after a 3 year layoff, and had fogotten this one.
This is how I play it, can’t remember who I got it from. By osmosis, or off the fingers of a flute paler maybe?
As I recall this version worked fine with fiddles and boxes the last time I played it (some time ago!)
