Offered for adoption is an U.S. Navy issued flute made by J.W. Pepper in 1894. SOLD!
The flute is made of Blackwood with nickel-silver keys and rings. She plays very well at A= 440, with the slide opened 4-5 mm (for me). The flute has a plethora of keys (10 and a double touch for the Bb - Very Nice!
See Pic. Below.). The flute appears to be modeled after a German Meyer’s flute, but plays better that any factory German flute I’ve ever had. The tuning is pretty good, with a nice even tone. The bottom D is a fog cutter, I can usually get the bottom C# and C (none to strong), but the bottom B is ephemeral (this is not do to any leaks, just nature of the beast).
Flute comes with its original case as shown in picture. The case’s top and bottom have separated, due to the demise of the cloth hinge.
The U.S. Navy stamp, Maker’s Mark and Serial Number atop the Left Hand Section:
The Double Touches on the Bb:
No this character from the old James Bond Movies “Live and Let Die” & “Man with the Golden Gun” didn’t make the flute!
J.W. Pepper is still a prominent music publisher and they started manufacturing instruments in 1880 (not sure when they ceased). J.W. Pepper also made history by producing the first Sousaphone!
