Currently offered for adoption is an exceptional Copley Eb & D combo, I am asking $900. This is really a buy one, get one free type offer. Cost new would be $1325, $985 for flute with sterling slide plus $340 for extra body.
This is an excellent corps de recharge. Dave really performed magic, there is no tuning cork adjustment needed when switching bodies and the tuning slide remains about the same (very minor adjustment if any). The tuning is to Copley’s exceptional standard! The fully lined head is sterling silver.
The tone of the D flute is a bit more focused than a typical Pratten model flute and tends to cut-through at a session.
The Eb-flute is just a pleasure to play, so articulant, fast and easy.
The only real flaw is a repaired crack in the Eb body, done by Dave 4-years ago. Honestly this repair is barely noticeable, I had to search for it to take the picture.
Forgive me - The Copley you have for sale looks great - spectacular deal! But typical Prattens that don’t sound focused or cut through a session? What Prattens have you been playing or hearing?
But to my ears, the Hawkes design (ie. Copley) has a more focused (my wife calls it “penetrating”) tone. To me Pratten designs tent to have a fatter sound. Both good, but a bit different!
This is just my experience, your mileage may vary.
No doubt on this end that the Copley has super tone and plenty of volume. Just questioned the idea that Pratten-types in general were less focused, or not loud enough (!). Definitely fatter - I’ll give you that!
Anyway, my being a curmudgeon kept your post at the top of the page… if I had the money, we’d be having a different conversation.
Yes, that’s a very good deal Jordan! A repaired crack in the tube (especially), that has been stable for 4 years, should present no problem later, if it is taken care of, as you would with any wooden flute.
I think Copleys are one of the best deals out there for flutes, either wood or Delrin. Your combo really makes a nice set-too bad I don’t have the moola either! Though someone will get a good deal from you, as usual! You couldn’t ask for a nicer seller either, by the way.
Jordan, I am a little puzzled why you show a photo of the cracked socket that looks “10X worse than reality”. To make an attractive offering, I would present a photo that looked as good as reality. I agree with you that the crack looks pretty bad in the photo.
I took over 20 pictures of the crack trying to get it to show up and be fully visible. I just thought it was fair to let potential buyers see it. In reality, I must look very closely to find it, hence it doesn’t really show up in a photo. I consider the crack to be a minor issue.
I’ve decided to sell this Copley combo and keep a Delrin Copley. But if this combo doesn’t sell, I’ll be happy to keep it and sell the Delrin.
