End Block and Tuning

Would the position of the end block (on the opposite side of the embouchure from the finger holes) affect the tuning of a flute? I have a cheap bamboo flute that when I got it the embouchure hole was completely blocked. I moved the block back so it will play. I was wondering whether the position of this block makes a difference. The flute is not in tune with itself. I have other flutes that are better in tune. Just wondering about the physics.

This can affect both tuning and response, although Terry McGee’s experiments show that the position of the head cork has the greatest effect on tuning in the 3rd octave, where you’re not likely to be playing much on a bamboo flute.

The normal position for the end cork is one bore diameter back from the center of the embouchure hole.

Too close to the embouchure hole, and the high notes become easier at the expense of the low notes. Too far away, and the low notes become easier at the expense of the high notes.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes,
