So I am making those bamboo flutes and I am quite impressed with the sound and the quality of bamboo that I have. The only question I have is how far away should I place the embochure hole from the node?I vaguely remember someone telling me this was very important for the second octave tuning. How far away on Low D and I guess many others, I cut about 25 different pieces and cured them. Any ideas?
When I’ve made flutes, I’m just not good enough to exactly figure out the distance from the node to the embouchure with precision, so I cut the flute longer, and I use a cork just like on a normal flute. I know that’s not much help, but it does allow for adjustments.

The flutomat might be helpful.

I also think the flutomat is the first to try. For the second octave tuning it is also very important to have the right distance between the end (stopper) of the flute and the embochure hole, and a somewhat conical shape of the flute. Please try the following links with plenty of informations about these topics:

I don’t think the flutomat gives an answer as to the distance of stopper to embochure hole.
For my wooden flutes I have generally 22mm distance measured inside from stopper end to centre of embochure hole. I got a lovely Bansuri flute in B at which the distance is 20mm, the bore is 24/26mm (its oval) and the second octave tuning is very good.
A slightly larger distance gives a better low end, a shorter distance may help the third octave.
