Electronic tuners

Can anyone recommend a good digital or analog tuner for the pipes. There are many fairly cheap ones available and a host of guitar tuners but I could do with a full chromatic type. The cheap ones seem to be variable from day to day ( tested against an electronic keyboard) and my wife and her friend have identical tuners which don’t agree with each other by about 10 cents.
Thanks
Tim

What sort of keyboard? Might be at fault itself. The old timers used to carry a hairdryer to warm their synths up to concert pitch before a gig!

My CA30 keeps me happy. I reckon the pipes will move far more just by taking them into a different room than the margin of error of the tuner.

Its a Yamaha and fairly good I think. I agree about moving rooms, one of ours rooms has been registering 90% humidity for about 10 weeks now. A combination of Devon and an old house with solid walls and no damp course. I have just started reedmaking so the tuner should help with that. Only about 30 reeds to go to get a good one if the average I read about here is anything to go by.

Sure, Korg CA-30 is the only meaningfull and working tuner for pipers.
All others (including other types of Korg tuners) are waste of money.

If I remember correctly the Korg OT-12M works fine. If money’s not an issue (good luck with that), the Peterson V-SAM is an excellent tuner all around.

All of these tuners work very well, but for economic and storage/lugging around purposes, I like the Korg C-30, hell, it even keeps my fiddle tuned.

Why?

Has anyone tried the Korg LCA-120? It includes the capability of programming temperament, like the now-discontinued MT-1200 had, so with a bit of configuration work it should work with Just intonation.

And at US$60, it’s considerably more affordable than the Peterson V-SAM.

I just use one of those keychain electronic pitch pipes, which gives me an A=440. Costs about $10. Then use your ears.

For the pipes, I use a Peterson VSAM, which allows tuning in just intonation based on any key:

I also love the V-SAM, but it’s spendy. The Korg LCA120 looks like a fascinating, cheaper alternative. Anyone actually using it?

By the way , Mike Eskin, Paddy Keenan called and wants his hat back…

Slan,

You think that’s a Keenan-inspired photo, check this one out:

Rock on, Michael!!!

Even though I didn’t start the thread I’ve been after a new tuner and I’ve just bought the Korg ca-30 and it’s very good. Bought it for a tenner which isn’t bad. Much better than my previous tuner and that was double the price. Kepp away from Tanglewood tuners great for guitars but no good for pipes.

Hi. I sent for the Korg CA30. It arrived the next day and so far has been very stable on all notes, previous tuners wavered wildly. Easy to see and use so thanks for the info.

Made me smile as I’m currently listening to some Clancy where his drones are doing just that!

Chanter sounds great though . .
