electronic tuner for pipes

Any recommendations on what is the most appropraite electronic tunes for Uilleann Pipes? Thinking particularily the drones and regs.
Also where to buy(I live in N. Ireland, so package and posting from the USA can negate lower costs there)

Korg CA-30(chromatic tuner about 25e) works well.

That’s the one I use. I bought mine at Guitar Center on sale for $19.99. Nice little unit.

Used sticky velcro strip so can attach mine to main stock while tuning … mostly used to check/set chanter, but detaches easily to set drones

Yup, that’s the unit. :slight_smile: I use mine solely for the chanter, I find it doesn’t work well enough for matching the drones to the chanter and so I tune them by ear.

UH, why use tuners for the drones??? Am I missing something. I use a tuner to see where my chanter is, but not my drones.

I do not use a tuner for tuning drones. I tried to once, but what the tuner says is correct, the ears say otherwise.

all ghpipe bands have tuners,usually korg ca 30.they use them for tuning chanters and drones and they work very well.you can also get a six foot extension which plugs into the korg and has a clip mike on the other end for clipping on to drones.i have not used the tuner for ups as i am just a beginner but when i get more experience i will try it.

Thanks to you all. Just got delivery of the korg 30 (bought off E Bay for £10.00! )It does the job , and BTW, is a great help getting the drones into a better shape than my limited ear has .

I use the Korg CA-30 as well. It’s quick and easy to use, accurate, can be recalibrated and reset quickly, and is pretty much foolproof (trust me, I’m fool enough to put that claim to the test).

Kinnaird Piping Supply makes a very useful clip-on microphone that I use with this unit and also use when I need to plug into a sound system.

I have never had any success using an electronic tuner as it quits just as you are getting close to the note.

I use a tuning fork pitched at the drone pitch. I use it to tune the tenor drone, then tune the other drones to the tenor, then tune the chanter to the drones.

I found that to be the easiest way to tune up.

I don’t use my tuner because the chanter and regulators are in tune with themselves (most of the time) and I am a solo piper
so I only have the tune the drones when starting and after 15 minutes

I use the Korg GT-12 tuner, gives freq settings in D from 438hz-445hz nice machine. :really: :wink:
