I remember the previous auction of the O’Mealy set. There was some discussion about the big ugly stensiling of “M. O’Malley” on the side of the set. I wounder if it could be removed:

I don`t think the set will reach much above what it is now, my limit is £3000

Sold for £4400 to somene in hertfordshire, uk. Could be anice set but i think £100 to have the set re-reeded is a bit of an optimistic quote by the seller

Looks like the O Mealy set has the original bass reg but the other two regs are (Ginsberg??) replacements.
Like the boxwood O Mealy set Joe McKenna used to play, with a mix of O Mealy and Ginsberg regs.

The Omealy set reached £4400 with dodgy reeds yet my Bruce set only reached £3300 so i had to get my mother to bid them up so i can keep them. The bruce set plays perfectly with superb reeds yet the omealy looks a bit dis-jointed with “mousey” reeds.???
£4400 would be a bargain[*] for an unmolested O’Mealy set - if it were complete. Even given the questionable origin of the other two regs (as far as I know, O’Mealy didn’t make tenor regs…), it doesn’t seem out of hand.
On the other hand, I think it’s a huge gamble to pay more than 4K for any set of used pipes without checking them out carefully in person first.

You can get a brand new set with the attendant back up from the maker for this money - one that you know will play in tune and have access to replacement reeds etc if required.

Neil O’Grady Half Set. (I’m not the seller)
I know that there are pipers who don’t like the look of NOG’s pipes but having played several of his chanters and half sets, my own opinion is that they play quite well and are great value for money. The light reeds that NOG makes as well as the lower volume of sound produced by the chanter would probably suit beginners.

I agree with PJ. I now own a NOG full set (just got the regs last week). I can say that the drones with his synth reeds sound good and are rock steady, and that my chanter sounds great with my own reed in it. BTW, my chanter is super easy to reed, even for a novice like myself (although good cane does help ). For a beginner, NOG pipes are great because of the light pressure chanter reeds Neil makes. And then later when more accustomed to the pipes a new player could acquire a stronger louder reed from any reed maker. (In the future I hope to specialize in making chanter reeds for NOG pipes especially considering how many NOG chanters are out there). Also, Neil is a pleasure to work with. A very decent man and a decent pipe maker. He is always available by email and by phone.
I know that NOG doesn’t make the most exquisite pipes in the world but last time I checked, this is an instument, not a beauty contest. How my pipes sound is far more important than what they look like. I have seen plenty of guys with beautiful looking pipes that sounded horrible, not in tune, or very dull and muted. I’d rather have something that plays great and save the money.

Al Ginsberg full set, boxwood
Very nice set, lovely boxwood, but such a pity about the banana chanter. I love the look and tone of boxwood but I’m always afraid of how it (although rarely) bends. Still its a great price for a beautiful set
The bend in the chanter is very slight. It is just the stresses within the wood working themselves out. It doesn’t effect tone, tuning or playability.
