East Durham, Catskills 2008

So who’s going to be there? I’m going to share a room with four single beds right in town with a few other folks, we’ll have our own kitchen etc, should be fun! I’m planning on taking concertina lessons with Tim Collins and someone else.

we’re thinking about it…

I’m there. My concertina experimentation sadly on hold for now, I’ll be in Mike Rafferty’s flute class in the mornings (at least those that I make it out of bed anyway) and Catherine McEvoy’s flute class in the afternoon.

Will, I really hope you cam make it… See ya there John, if you see a drunken bald guy screwing up on the concertina or stalking Edel Fox it will probably be me!!

Hey John,

I’ll see you in Catherine’s class! All the best,
Arbo

I’m still trying to talk Larry back into it. Some close friends decided to make this their first year at Augusta so now he’s wavering. It’s a tough decision :frowning: , but I so want to go North!

I’ll be there! I’m taking bouzouki lessons with Alec Finn. (I didn’t really apply myself to whistle playing till after I’d registered for East Durham. Now I’m wondering if it’s too late for me to switch, and take, say, the morning bouzouki class with Alec and an afternoon whistle class with someone.)

I’m signed up for both of those as well - see you there!

I’m going. I’ll be in Mary Bergin’s whistle class in the morning and Mike Rafferty’s flute class in the afternoon.

I’m there also. See you in Mike Rafferty’s morning class John. I’m with Mary Bergin in the afternoon.

Paul Keating has a nice write up of the plans so far in this week’s Irish Voice - you can read it online here:

All the best,

Ah yes the rag that steals photographs (placed on this forum with an obituary), publishes them and then doesn’t reply to e-mails identifying the photographer. Lovely publication, great of you to recommend them.

I can only go for 3days. Is it better to be there the first three days or the last three days?

I’ve never been to the Arts Week (though I was in East Durham for part of the Banjo Burke festival last fall, so I’m slightly familiar with the area).

But I can tell you a couple of details that might help you decide:

First, Saturday is fundamentally different. The pro musicians who give classes mon - fri are giving an all day concert Saturday, which might appeal to some.

Second, note that the Greyfox Bluegrass Festival starts Thursday, in the middle of Arts Week, and Greyfox is now located just outside of East Durham, in Oak Hill. This is the first year they’ve done that, and it wouldn’t surprise me if traffic will start to be a nightmare on Thursday. I don’t know how well East Durham’s roads are prepared to handle one music festival, let alone two.

well, we’re not going to make it. We’re going to go up to the northwest later in the month and visit randal, becky, and others in that area.

Tiff,
I thought I’d get to see you in Catherine’s class in the afternoon? Ahhh. I can’t believe you folks are taking TWO classes. Personally, I find one class enough. Also, perhaps you go to bed earlier than I? There isn’t a cup of coffee in East Durham that can get me ready for an AM class!

Ahhh too bad but heck, visiting Becky is worthwhile  Have fun!

We’ll be up sometime Thursday. Everybody else on this thread must be already there!

Well, it’s the first time I take concertina lessons, and I’m so happy about it. Tim collins is an amazing teacher. He doesnt teach tunes, he teaches technique, exactly what I need. He picks one tune per class and we barely go through it, he teaches us plenty of technique on small phrases.

Anyway, it’s the first time I come here with classes in mind instead of sessions, and I’m happy I did.

Also, thank God there’s people like ceemonster, she slowed down a session that was terribly fast, and with her lovely style she made it much more interting
