DVD Recommendations?

Well, I finally got a DVD player. In part because I wanted a copy of the movie Songcatcher. Songcatcher was priced at over 80 dollars for VHS;but only 22 for DVD. My wife and daughters, got me a player for christmas, along with a great Anime, two Star Wars, and the LOTR Extended version DVD’s. They figured they would leave the music selections to me.

I did some looking around and decide to pick up two DVD’s: Songcatcher and Solas Live. This morning I got an e-mail that both were just shipped and should be here in about a week. I’m really excited about getting the Songcatcher DVD.

I was wondering, if anyone had any additional recommendations for Irish, folk, or mountain music DVD’s.

On DVD how do you …

Chieftains Over Ireland
Gael Force

O Brother Where Art Thou

Gael Force (!)

Chieftains - an Irish Evening (with Roger Daltrey and Nanci Griffith)

Eric Clapton and Friends in Concert (OK, I’m a guitarist, too)

Jethro Tull - Living With the Past (especially when he pulls out the Olwell)

“The Secret of Roan Inish” has a lot of Irish music in it.

-Joe

Brassb.

Thanks for the Clapton suggestion, as much as I love folk and Irish trad. I couldn’t live with out my Clapton cds to play, especially the unplugged album.

Knowing that Ian Anderson has a DVD is also cool.

Brass/Jesse: What’s Gael Force like?

Dan the Where art thou is on my long term list because my wife like the movie; however, the “.. Inspired” concert DVD is on my short list.

Thanks folks, any more?

Gael Force is REALLY good! It is basically a collection of clips culled from a HUGE concert at the Point Theatre in Dublin. Most of the performances are rather “Fairportish”, as would be expected with names like Clannad, Christy Moore, and Mary Black on the list, (but to me, that’s a good thing), but there’s some good Trad stuff in there, too (like the Chieftains).

Where does one get a DVD of Solas live?

Jim,
Solas](http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6305863261/103-2898477-7406233%3ESolas) Live From Amazon.com/CDnow.

Thanks, Lee.

“Waking Ned Devine” is a pretty neat movie that is based in Ireland with some great music as well. Might be hard to find, though.

Lee, no recommendations at this moment, but I just had to comment on Songcatcher. It’s one of my all-time favorite movies, having watched it on cable 4 times. I had no idea you could get it on DVD! Forgive me if I missed this somewhere, but did you get it at Amazon.com?

EDITED to answer my own question… I see you got Solas from Amazon, so it would stand to reason that Songcatcher came from there as well.

Not IRTRad or whistle, but if you like jazz and gypsy style music, there’s a great documentary on Stephen Graphelli that includes all the footage known to exist with Django Rheinhardt. Fantastic stuff.

Don’t know if you’ve seen the DVDs at this sight. I don’t know anything about them, just found them in my “travels”.

I don’t know if UPS tracking is a blessing or a curse.

My DVD’s left Lexington KY at 1 am this morning and got out of Columbus OH at 4:30 am on there way to Baltimore.

Patience, patience, patience,
Its a character trait, Right.
Yes, a gooood character trait.
I’m a character, why can’t I find any.

Béla Fleck and the Flecktones.
Almum/DVD-Live at the Quick.
The Flecktones are an underrated mixture of bluegrass, funk, jazz, rock, pop, well, just about everything. The amazing musicianship astounds me. But then, if you don’t like that kind of stuff, well, it sucks for you.
LOOK INTO THIS!!!

If you like mountain music then you need to check out “High Lonesome” (its the story of Bluegrass. Excellent.

Lee, we got my dad a laptop a few months ago, and when we told him he could play DVDs on it as well, he ran right out and bought Songcatcher (he and I had seen it four or five times during the few short weeks it played here). I understand they’ve released a second volume of the Songcatcher soundtrack, as well, with more of the traditional music (the first was lots of “inspired by the movie”, a bit more modern-sounding songs).

Enjoy it!
