Drone stock air holes

Tonight, while playing, my drone stock popped all the way out, thanks to winter playing conditions and all. Anyway, before I tightened it back into place I noticed that the holes in the stock (bag side) opposite the drones are plugged with cork while the two regulator holes are open. I have three drones but currently no regulators (although two are on the way). Shouldn’t it be the other way around, the two regulator holes plugged while the three holes opposite the drones should be open? It seems lately that the chanter and drones are often out of balance with one another in regards to air requirement. Could this possibly be the source, or is it time for new drone reeds?

Ailin,

No, your set up is correct. The drone switch, when opened, lifts the valve and allows air to pass into the drone sockets via three smaller holes in the main airway, drilled at an angle to the three bores. The regulators need air all the time, while the drones can be switched off. That is why the holes are only blocked off at one end until you fit the regulators..

Rather than try new reeds I would re-hemp the mainstock; as the stock shot out of the receiver cup it would appear that air could be escaping there.

Hope this helps.

Yes, that does help. I didn’t know how the inside of the stock is designed, but now it makes sense. And yes, I will be tightening things up all around, as everything is starting to move too much, not only the stock but drone slides, windcap, etc.

Thanks Mike!
