I saw the elder drone reed thread, and it brought up a thought that I have been thinking for awhile.
I’ve seen pictures of someone’s drone reeds somewhere here, and they had a rather unusual shape. The tongue was very narrow at the top, but got wider at the bottom. Almost like a pear shape. And it made me want to ask: How much would it affect the timbre/tone of the drones?
I also am curious to know, how does elder and other non-cane materials sound compared to cane reeds?
Elder has a lovely stable buzz off it.
Alain Froment thought the drones in the Ennis set had reeds made of Lilac.
Buddleia, growing wild on and around derelict buildings all over Ireland, has been suggested as a source of drone reed material in the past.
We’ve got some raspberry growing in our backyard. I’ve heard it could be used. Is it like elder, where the tongue has to be cut fresh while it has just been harvested?
That’s pretty cool about Séamus Ennis’s drone reeds, lots of neat info about them, Wonder why Liam replaced them. I also wonder who made them. We have also got a lilac bush in our backyard, but there’s no pith at the center, must be only with certain species..
