Does anyone rent practice sets ?

I’d really like to get my hands on a practice set of pipes for a couple of weeks or a month to try them out.

Does anyone offer this service?

The way we do,in Britanny:
we make an association, then the members pay a fee which allow us to buy some practise sets; these sets are rent so that new members can try the instrument during one year and decide to go on or not.

Is there an association in your region?

The Seattle piper’s club has a few sets they give out on loan as far as I know.

All my students start out on loan sets from Na Piobairi Uilleann, which I must say is a mixed blessing.

I have an offer to rent one of the Pakistani practice sets (with plastic reed)…

Is this worth the trouble, or should I wait for something better?

I just want some inkling of whether or not the pipes and I will get along before I spend a chunk of money on a good practice set…do you think the Pakistani set would serve this purpose for a month or two, or will they scare me away?

If you buy a good working used set of traditional pipes (no plastic reeds) and you didn’t like them after 2-3 months, you could probably get your money back on the resale.
That would make your ‘rental’ nearly free (after deducting freight) which is a better deal than paying to rent a set and freight to return it.
