Hi David
Ask at your local library to get you in a copy of “The Flute”, by Otto Langey. (Why are almost all books on the flute called “The Flute”? What does it say about us?)
In the opening section, you’ll find fingering charts for all the common systems of flutes in the late 19th century, going right back to the 8-key (a Hawkes, you’ll be pleased to note) and going on to the Boehm (with open and closed G#), Carte’s 1867, and the Radcliff.
Note too that Radcliff’s name has no terminal E.
“We was so poor in those days, we couldn’t afford a terminal E. Not like old Carte - he was born a common Cart, but 'e added an extra e once he became a flute player. Made all 'is money selling flutes. And look at that young pup McGee - not just one, but two terminal E’s. He must be selling a lot of flutes!”

When are you going to start making Radcliffs, Terry? I need to know so I can plan to have a house to get a second mortgage on to afford all those keys ![]()
Don’t tempt the guy. I once made a flippant remark to him like that and I am still trying to convince my wife I need a new piccolo.
Terry many thanks for that ill get onto the libraray soon.
I will upload those photos of those B flat bass flutes for your thread been meaning to do it but never got around to it.
