Dizi

Mooching the web today I found a marvellous video clip of Jan Yung-Ming performing his own composition “Listening to the Fountain” on the Chinese bamboo flute (Dizi). It’s not ITM obviously, but it’s stunning listening. Trouble is, it was in VCD format (AVI) and huge - nearly 70MB!

I’ve taken the liberty of converting it to both .wmv (still big at 27MB, but well worth the download just to watch his fingering!) and shockwave flash (around 4MB).

Thought I’d share… it might take a little while for the video to load into your browser, but be patient, I reckon it’s worth the wait:

There’s a link on that page to download the clip in .wmv format (zipped up for convenience). Here’s where the original came from: http://www.yogimont.net/jia/dizi/qinyuan.html

Amazing! Thank you.

Wow! That flute speaks!

And from multiple embouchure holes!

Too much Paul Horn influence…

:poke:

I think he plays on a finger hole, the third from the top (?). It seems to work easier on a bamboo flute than on a conical blackwood flute, which has smaller finger holes and thicker walls.

Thanks Gary for sharing this video of an amazing performance!
