DIY fipple design question

I’m running a project for my daughters’ brownie troop in which I shall have them “make” slide whistles. The make is in inverted commas because they will assemble them from parts I have made with very basic adaptation of plumbing pipe.

Having done the ground work I am feeling more adventurous and when time allows would like to experiment in real whistle making. However what I have made so far will only produce a sound when the tube is closed (which is fine for the slide whistle project). I am assuming that I will have to be far more accurate in my mouth piece construction for an open whistle. Are there any resources that discuss this aspect of whistle making?

Closed ended pipes are more forgiving than open ended.

  1. You might try filing the underside of the ramp.
  2. File a better chamfer of the windway floor.
  3. Block to ramp distance might be too far. (or too short)
  4. A diagonal scratch in the windway is causing the air to spill to side of the ramp

For a slide whistle, the moveable plug could have a leak.
