Dixon flutes

I’ve noticed that Dixon flutes are quite inexpensive; any feedback re quality?
Thanks to all,
Jon Michaels

Which one?
Dixon makes a number of flutes.
Ive have his cheapest plastic flute and Ive tried his more expensive one. Basically your getting what you pay for, there not bad flutes but if you want a cheap, starter flute I think an owell patrick might be a better idea. Better made , sound and more in tune. LIke i said there not bad flutes and the cheap plastic one is easy to play adn requires no maitenance. Plus if your interested in starting low whistle the dixon combo is the cheapest route out there.

Thanks for the feedback; yes, I’m looking for a cheap, easy to play starter flute that will play in D and G. Is Olwell a better way to go?

WhistlingGypsy let me play his bamboo Olwell a short while back. What a great flute, especially for the price. I’ve got a three-piece Dixon which I like a lot, but I think I’m going to add one of Olwell’s bamboo flutes to the arsenal.

The Dixon has the advantage of being a conventional flute and being hardy enough
to withstand anything. I used to keep it with me during the day wrapped in a dishcloth in my backpack. It’s also a great play, although it’s a small-holed flute, and I’m finding myself to be a bit aggressive for it.

But you can’t go wrong with one of Olwell’s bamboo flutes. I think they’re one of the best deals out there, if the one I tried was representative.

What I like about my Dixon low d is that the finger stretch is do-able for me. There were some prior posts within the past 60 days or so when somebody actually measured the distances between finger holes of various low d whistles. I believe the Overton low D was a “smidge” smaller (thank you, Julia Child)but for price and its ability to bear potential abuse, the Dixon may be worth your while.(Pardon me, now we’ll just add a little sherry. Hello, this flute is being discussed pretty often on the flute board so you can do an archive search there to see what has been said.

Two thumbs up for the Olwell D bamboo flute. I love mine. Easy to play, sounds great. Just make sure to keep it oiled, it sounds better if you do.
