Desi on "Youtube"

I’ve come across some great playing by Desi Wilkinson, Gerry O’Connor and Brendan Hearty on guitar on “Youtube” which I’m sure would be of interest to most of us here.
Search for “21/07/11 Steeple Sessions” - some other good stuff posted as well.
Before someone asks, the 4-part polka which goes all the way up to the high “D” is called “The Shelf”, a favourite with Northern Ireland flute players.

Great stuff, Kenny, thanks for pointing it out.

Desi and Gerry recorded The Shelf and the polka that follows it on that classic album Cosa gan Bhroga, that they recorded together with Gerry’s late wife Eithne. I had heard there were plans to reissue that recording…did it ever happen?

99% certain it never made it on to CD, Brad, which is a great shame. I’ll email Desi and ask him. Watch this space.

As you can see - there are more than 1 kind of “session”
Thanks for providing that link.

I’m a big fan of Cran and Desi. I saw them a few years back here in Holland. Sadly, they don’t perform often hier (every ten years or so).
A small anecdote:
After the first part of that performance, I had a small talk with Desi about his interest in Bretons traditional music. He told me he lived there for a few years. So, I told him I came from a small village called Landivisiau in Brittany. Desi said that one of his good friend lived in that same village. I don’t know that guy, but what a small world we live on !!!

I learned the Shelf, 1 and 2 from a video of Harry Bradley and Jean Michel Veillon posted via Jem on facebook. But I heard Teada play the first and Their fiddler do the second on other albums. Great tunes !

“Cosa Gan Bhroga” has just been released on CD. There’s a company in Co. Antrim selling them on eBay for £14.99. Go get 'em - hope it goes platinum !

So that’s the name. A local young feller has been playing that one lately, and it’s an exciting, high-energy tune, just perfect for the flute. He plays it with nice diaphragmatic pulsing which serves it well and really stands out on the ascending runs in the 4th part.
