If there is a single CD (or older recording not on CD) that you’d like to see under your holiday tree, and you had but one to ask for, which one would it be? (presuming you don’t have it already).
Mine would be an original of John McKenna’s recordings. Either that or a bootleg (which is all that exists) of Ms. Havlin playing at the pub.

A bootleg CD of David Migoya winning the Northeasterns with a perfect score of 100 would be nice.
The Deirdre Havlin pub tape would definitely top my list. If anybody has a copy, PLEASE mail me offlist.

KS – Deirdre Havlin was a member of the group Deanta. They recorded three albums in the mid-late '90’s; she was on the second and third. In addition to Deirdre’s flute and whistle, they had a fantastic vocalist, who was an All-Ireland champion; a wonderful fiddler; and a really good rhythm section with bouzouki, guitar, and harp, the latter of which was also featured some as a lead instrument.
A few things make her special. Most noteably, she’s an awesome flute player. I can’t quite describe why I think she’s so great, but her style is very rhythmic and not very highly ornamented. Not the in-your-face virtuoso playing of a Matt Molloy or Seamus Egan, but very tasteful and with a deep feeling for the music. Also, AFAIK, she’s always had a day job and mostly does music as a hobby. I believe that when Deanta were together, all the members had day jobs, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s one reason they broke up despite having achieved a certain amount of acclaim in the ranks of ITM.
The thing that makes any new (or really hard to find bootleg) music by her so highly sought after is that her entire body of commercially available music is about two hours worth of Deanta CD’s. I’ve never found her credited on another album.
I think there’s a Deanta cut on the Wooden Flute Obsession collection if you have that.
I will second everyone’s thought on Deirdre Havlin playing. There is something about her playing on the Obsession CD that struck me as well.
I will also add June Ní Chormaic to Santa’s list. I wish she would come out with a cd of flute and harp. I think they go great together and I was glad to see the combo bust out of playing just airs to playing some nice pulsing reels!
One last thing on my list would be a flute only album (no whistle..thank you very much) with Seamus Eagan and another with Cathal McConnell.

When I spoke to him about Wooden Flute Obsession, he indicated it might be time for him to put together another solo CD. I mentioned perhaps a duet track (NOT with Ian Anderson) and he seemed cool to the idea. I guess he’s already done a couple, and also played with family members.

If they’d toured the U.S., they would probably have been another hit on the scale of Lunasa or Danu.

Actually, I could have used Deirdre Havlin’s solo flute from a part of Hammy(Hamilton)'s Jigs on Ready For the Storm, but I was struck by how well her flute line could be heard throughout the Deanta ensemble track I did include, and how tastefully she plays. She performs a lot live, gives workshops, and now apparently may be a member of The London Lasses.

A CD or any tape recording of Sligo fluteplayer Pat Mahon. Quiet simply the best flute player I’ve ever heard. I’ve only heard him play live in a bar, a couple of times, and it was like hearing Jimi Hendrix or Johnny Doran for the first time. Just blew you away. Amazing power, tone and presence. A special man and musician indeed. Makes Matt Molloy sound feeble. Seems to be a living legend locally. Colm Doyle, brother of John Doyle (guitarist), told me some stories about when Pat came to town, some funny, some very tragic.

Hey, how about a recording of that Brian Rooney fellow I keep hearing whispers about? Supposedly, the man is every bit the piper that Johnny Doran was. It’s like Rooney is almost a mythical legend, I hear so much about him and at the same time so little.
Any sort of recording of him would do…

Big John Rooney plays more in the style of Felix Doran than Johnny Doran. Michael Doran was taught by Felix, but wasn’t that keen on learning the pipes, Big John was. John plays a lovely Dave Williams set made in 1982, a copy of Felix’s “silver” set with the new “silver regs” made by Frank Groker of Manchester.
