Does anyone else have this problem? I want to compare tone/tuning between 2 whistles, so naturally I pick the most ruthless critic I know…my wife. However, after playing whistle A and whistle B, she looks at me (very much in the manner a school teacher looks at a slow student…) and says “Yes, they sound like pennywhistles, Dear”.

You’re probably correct… she was probably exercising diplomacy at a level the would have Kissinger green with envy.

We did the white-cap(my favorite) vs. the Sindt (a worthy aponent (sp?)
I like the sound of the Sindt in the other room, but I prefer the white-cap when I am playing it. The Sindt sounds more chiffy!
I commiserate here - unfortunatley there is no way to accuratley defin which way your philistine is tuned - most are either Just or Even tempered. Mine is Just - so I might get a response like “you have’t taken the garbage out yet!”
Just in case - prime the philistine with roses and sneek the question in - in between some observations about the great smells in the garden or the fabric on the sofa…
One day as a visiting whistler was playing one of my whistles, my wife said
“So THAT’S what they’re supposed to sound like!”
That was several years ago. Now she examines for cosmetic imperfections when I dare show her one.
I will say that she has developed more tolerance (or I’ve gotten better).

I’ll get done playing a tune, think I’ve done particularly well with it, then look over to my wife and see her head slowly easing out from between her shoulder blades like a turtle peeking cautiously from her shell. On a positive note, she’ll probably let my buy something a little quiter than the Susatos I’m playing now.
My wife pretty much just ignores my whistle playing and only complains now if I play my accordion around her.
It was all Delilah’s fault.
i told my wife about this thread. she thinks there should be a forum “support group for family and friends of whistleplayers.”
… guess my wife would readily join that group!
